Advion BioSciences, Inc. has an immediate available opening for an industrial post doctoral researcher to carry out research to explore the use of dried blood spots (DBS) for the bioanalytical LC/MS/MS determination of drugs and their metabolites in blood samples.
The goal is to acquire benchmark quantitative results obtained using established SRM LC/MS techniques where incurred blood samples are provided in ampoules which are then extracted using established protein precipitation, SPE or liquid-liquid extraction techniques. These results will then be compared with those obtained from the elution dried blood spots where a paper-based or similar substrate is used to collect and store the sample of blood. An additional goal is to develop innovative techniques to improve upon the use of DBS and related sample collection and storage media coupled with the use of modern mass spectrometer systems. It is planned that a new AB/SCIEX 5500 QTRAP as well as a new Thermo Exactive Orbitrap system will be used in the proposed research. The former can provide novel linear ion trap MS/MS data acquisition experiments whereas the Exactive can provide high resolution mass accuracy measurements as an added element of selectivity to LC/MS and/or LC/MS/MS experiments. The ideal post doctoral candidate should consider this a golden opportunity to learn to use these modern, high-performance mass spectrometer systems as we quest for the new DBS paradigm in bioanalytical analyses.
The selected post doctoral candidate will have demonstrated good oral and written communication skills, a passion for applied scientific research, a desire to work in a small team environment and a solid background in modern analytical techniques with ‘good hands and a good head’ for innovation and application of LC/MS and sample preparation techniques. A strong foundation in modern trace quantitative analysis techniques associated with robust and reliable method development and validation via LC/MS techniques are desirable.
The position is available on or before 1 August 2010 with a term of 12 months with renewal possible pending satisfactory performance and availability of funds. This post doctoral position is an excellent way for a person with an academic background to gain real-world bioanalytical LC/MS/MS experience which can lead to promising opportunities for future employment either at Advion or other companies engaged in LC/MS applications.
