What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about developing new electronic materials and developing devices to support integration of renewable energy resources on the electrical grid? Our team is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct electronic materials characterization, analyzing high-frequency and high electric-field transport in disordered materials. You will be part of a team with expertise including thin-film materials growth, microfabrication, electronic materials characterizations, reliability physics, and electrical grid protection devices.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Plan and perform electrical transport measurements; collect and analyze data to understand transport physics and material reliability.
• Work with technical staff to design and validate new testbed architectures.
• Use CAD electromagnetic modeling software and/or circuit modeling software to design devices and packaging architectures
• Interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia to develop new research opportunities and projects
• Publish professional journal articles and present work at local and national conferences

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

• Possess, or pursuing, a PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field
• Experience in experimental research involving electronic materials, electrical characterization, or device physics
• Evidence of excellent communication skills as demonstrated by a record of publications and presentations
• Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience with high frequency (>1 MHz) characterization of materials or devices
• Experience with high-frequency measurement systems such as impedance analyzers or vector network analyzers
• Proficiency with data analysis and control software (e.g. MATLAB, LabVIEW)
• Proficiency with circuit modeling (e.g. SPICE) and or electromagnetic modeling (COMSOL, ANSYS) software
• Desire to mentor undergraduate or graduate students
• Candidates must be self-motivated and independent researchers with excellent oral and written communication skills

About Our Team:

The Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department 1816 provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, optical, electrochemical, structural and selective-molecular-binding applications. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nano- to the micro-scale, in inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at optimizing and expanding material performance. Our efforts support DOE Defense Programs, DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, DOE Electricity Distribution and Energy Reliability offices, other federal agencies and industry. In addition, we pursue partnerships with universities and establish ongoing collaborations with other experts in the field to leverage our research investments while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community. Research thrusts include nanoparticle, nanofiber, and atomic layer deposited materials, thin films, passive and active materials for electronic, magnetic, photonic, electromechanical, and fluidic microsystems, self-assembly, and colloid chemistry.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
